How is New Deposit-Return System for Recycling Bottles & Cans in Hungary Working Out?
More than 1bn bottles and cans have been returned in the past six months through Hungary's new deposit-return system (DRS), MOHU, a unit of Hungarian oil and gas company MOL that has a nationwide municipal waste management concession said.

Between Christmas and New Year's Day, the number of returns exceeded 10m on several days, it added.

Over 180m bottles and cans have been returned in Budapest since the DRS was launched.

The DRS operates at 4,500 locations around the country, including 1,500 where returns are manual.

Paper vouchers for in-store purchases with a value of over HUF 40bn have been issued in the DRS. More than HUF 118m has been contributed to children's hospitals. Around 16pc of consumers have return refunds transferred directly to their bank accounts.

The daily number of returns exceeds 4m on average, with Saturdays being the busiest.

During the development of the DRS system MOL has installed vending machines worth HUF 40bn across the country. MOHU's goal is to recycle at least 90pc of beverage packaging within three years.
