New State Secretary For Higher Education In Hungary Named

Human resources minister Zoltán Balog on Thursday named László Palkovics as state secretary for higher education. In an interview to news website mno.hu, Balog said the reason he had chosen Palkovics for the job was that part of his expected approach would be to incorporate an economic point of view which serves the interests of the whole nation.
Palkovics has been a department head at Budapest’s Technical University and worked German braking systems manufacturer Knorr-Bremse’s Hungarian unit.
He helped to establish the technical college in Kecskemét, central Hungary, where German car maker Mercedes Hungary is headquartered.
“Everyone with a degree should be able to find a job,” he said.
Balog added that Palkovics had been picked to implement the new system whereby the government elects university chancellors, whose job will be to keep the institutions’ finances on the straight and narrow.
