New Section Of Cycling Trail Of Iron Curtain Inaugurated In Hungary
A new section of the Iron Curtain cycling trail was inaugurated by Hungarian and Austrian politicians on Tuesday, the day marking the 25th anniversary of the Pan- European Picnic in western Hungary. Organised by the opposition, the picnic took place at Sopronpuszta close to the Austrian border on this day 25 years ago. The event paved the way for the fall of the Iron Curtain.

“The freedom we celebrate today was born at Sopronpuszta where the Iron Curtain was opened at the initiative of the opposition MDF party in 1989, allowing several hundred East Germans to escape to Austria,” Hungarian Defence Minister Csaba Hende said.

The Iron Curtain Trail, also known as Route 13 of European cycle route network EuroVelo, is a partially completed long-distance cycling route designed to run along the entire length of the one-time Iron Curtain.

Once completed, it will run along 7,650 kilometres from the Barents Sea down to the Black Sea.
