Kúria Decision On Hungarian Inmate “Unacceptable”
A recent decision by the Kúria, Hungary’s supreme court, in connection with the life sentence of a Hungarian inmate is unacceptable, the government office chief told a regular government press briefing. János Lázár commented on Kúria’s decision on June 11, under which László Magyar, a convicted felon serving a real life sentence for the physical abuse of elderly people, should be eligible for parole in 40 years at the earliest.

Last October the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Magyar’s sentence constituted cruel and unusual punishment and that the inmate must be eligible for parole after having served 25 years.

Lázár criticised Kúria’s decision concerning a man who tortured elderly people to death and committed a string of robberies and other crimes.

Its decision goes against the penal code and allows a criminal who can pose danger to society to go free, he said, adding that the prime minister has asked the justice minister to initiate consultations with the Kúria on the matter.
