Justice Minister: Strong Member States Vital For EU
The European Union can only be strong if its member states are, Justice Minister László Trócsányi said in Budapest. The stability of European integration requires the “art of negotiation”, genuine dialogue and mutual respect among member states, the minister said at a conference on Gaullism, a political thought based on the principles of former French President Charles de Gaulle characterised by a commitment to national sovereignty.

Trócsányi said that although Europe’s relative economic strength is declining on the international stage, it can remain a key player if member states optimised the balance between national competencies and EU-level decision-making.

He said EU member states must also survive in a globalised world and even the strongest member states need the EU to survive. He said the end of the Cold War brought about a chance for the rise of a new world order, yet the world now finds itself in disorder and chaos with the rise of terrorism.

The minister said that while the global centres of power were clearly defined during the Cold War, today’s centres of power are more scattered and harder to identify.
