’Geishas By The Danube’ Exhibition, Until 12 March
“Geisha” was one of the first Japanese words to enter the Hungarian language, which is why it appears in the title of this exhibition featuring: Authentic Japanese and Chinese objects, and the 'best of Hungarian Japonism'. The exhibition is open until 12 March 2017, and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The special exhibition, which presents the influence of Japanese culture on Hungarian fine arts material from the turn of the century, can be visited until the middle of March. The joint exhibition of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts and the Kovács Gábor Art Foundation awaits enthusiasts in the Palace of Guards, Castle Garden Bazaar.

The keen interest in Japan that marked the Western countries and Hungary from the middle of the 19th century, was called “Japonism”, as were the works of art inspired by Japanese art. The period’s fashionable ceramics were decorated with Japanese figures and motifs, theatre stages featured Madame Butterfly, and no respectable woman’s wardrobe would have been complete without a kimono.
