His driver and two other people in the car were also injured. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was shocked to hear about the letter bomb attack against former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos … and condemns in the strongest terms this cowardly and heinous attack, as it does all acts of terror threatening the lives of Europeans,” the ministry said on Friday.

Hungary’s government is doing everything it can to guarantee the security of Hungarians “and our European allies can always count on us” when it comes to security, the ministry said, wishing the former prime minister a speedy recovery.

Greek authorities have said Papademos did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Papademos, 69, was Greece’s caretaker prime minister for six months in 2011-2012 and served as the head of its central bank from 1994 to 2002.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
