Cinemira Festival in Budapest - Global Films for Children, 24 – 31 October

Movies made for children and teenagers are at the heart of the Cinemira International Children’s and Youth Film Festival, taking place again at several cultural venues around Budapest.

Hungary’s international film festival dedicated to young audiences combines screenings with workshops, industry events and meetings with filmmakers. Its programme is divided into age groups, allowing families to choose films and activities suited to younger children or teenagers.

The competition programme features several hundred short films and animations from more than 80 countries, competing for the Golden Squirrel award. A Panorama section also presents previously award-winning international films.

Among the programme highlights is Michel Gondry’s Maya, Give Me a Title, followed by a discussion with animation directors. The festival also welcomes Belgian animation director Vincent Bal for a workshop focusing on shadow animation, while sessions with Hungarian film directors and Digic Pictures offer insights into animation and filmmaking.

Young participants can get involved themselves through practical workshops covering stunt performance, dance choreography, dubbing, comic book creation and casting. The programme also includes the Children’s and Youth Film Pitch Forum, where new film and series ideas are presented to industry professionals, and a Junior Pitch Forum for teenagers aged 14 to 18.

The festival takes place at the Marczibányi Téri Cultural Center, Institut Français de Budapest and Dugattyús. Activities run throughout the week, with individual screenings and workshops having their own age recommendations and schedules.

Tickets are required for most screenings and workshops, with places limited for some popular sessions. Advance booking is recommended.

Cinemira offers families in Budapest a combination of international cinema, creative activities and opportunities to meet people working in the film industry, with the programme designed specifically around young audiences.

Cinemira International Children’s Film Festival in Budapest this October

The Cinemira International Children’s Film Festival is Hungary’s only event dedicated to films for children and teenagers. This year, the festival expands to two weekends to reach a wider young audience. Cinemira TEEN takes place from October 8-10 at Akvárium Club in central Budapest, while Cinemira KIDS, for ages 4 to 12, will be held on October 23-24 at Millennium Park.
