Rail infrastructure plays an essential role in implementing Hungary’s foreign trade strategy, the foreign minister said at a rail conference on Tuesday. Hungary’s trade figures have surpassed records in every year since 2014, and this achievement must now be consolidated by further developing the country’s infrastructure, Péter Szijjártó told participants of the Hungarian Railway Association’s conference.
The government has earmarked 1,500 billion forints (EUR 4.8bn) for rail development projects by 2020, Szijjártó said.
These include upgrading 900 kilometers of rail tracks and putting new trains in operation, adding 45,000 seats to the current stock, he added.
With the new developments, Hungary’s power-operated train network will expand to 3,300km, he said.
