Night Shelters 90% Used Up
Night shelters filled up to 90% of their capacity over the weekend due to the cold weather conditions, Menhely Alapítvány (Shelter Foundation) director Zoltán Aknai told Klubrádió on Monday.

The rate was 85% in Budapest while in some counties such as Heves, Tolna, Hajdú and Jász it was 100%. Support organisations are accommodating those in need with extra mattresses. The network is doing its best to admit those who need to spend the night at the shelters, Aknai said.

The cabinet has increased the Ft 360 million sum allocated for the crisis period by a further Ft 50 million due to the extremely cold weather. The amount will be spent on buying blankets and sleeping bags for the homeless.

Power supplier Elmü-Émász has announced a moratorium on switching off electricity supplies from Tuesday until Sunday in Borsod, Heves and Nógrád counties, the service provider told state news agency MTI on Monday.
