Shakespeare Festival, Gyula, 9 – 15 July
The drama Hamlet will be in focus at this year’s international Shakespeare Festival beginning in Gyula, in southeastern Hungary.

The week-long festival will feature unconventional performances of Shakespeare’s major piece by Hungarian and international theatre groups, as well as concerts, film screenings and roundtable discussions, the organisers told MTI.

It will open with Italy’s experimental group Teatro Potlach’s performance of Shakespeare Overture and Hungary’s Neptun Brigád presenting Hamletman, a solo performance.

Hamlet in modern interpretations will be performed by the Kolyada Theatre from Russia’s Yekaterinburg, the Flute Theatre from Britain and Unteatru from Romania.

The British cult trio Tiger Lillies will give a concert on Friday and will participate in the presentation of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead on Saturday and Sunday. The festival programme includes a screening of the best-known film adaptions of Hamlet.
