The European Union should not give a single penny to Hungary or Viktor Orban's government until the Orban government releases the domestic and EU funds owed to Hodmezovasarhely, said Peter Marki-Zay, mayor of Hodmezovasarhely, in Brussels.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán vowed to make it illegal for NGOs to receive money from the US as he ramped up his rhetoric against such groups in his Friday morning interview with Kossuth Rádió, asserting that their aim is to overthrow his government.
The Sovereignty Protection Authority said on Friday it is doing everything in its power to ensure that foreign money is not used to fund political activities in Hungary, adding that it will focus on uncovering organisations funded by American aid agency USAID in the coming weeks, in addition to "political pressure networks funded by Brussels".
Weekly newspapers were already on the stands when tens of thousands of people attended the 15 March rally where Péter Magyar, the divorced husband of former justice minister Judit Varga announced his plan to set up a new centrist party. This week, most commentators express scepticism about his initiative.
