Bartók International Art Week Starts

The 2nd Bartók Spring International Art Week - presenting classical concerts and exhibitions - will get under way this April in Budapest, and several other cities, between 1 - 7 April.

Péter Eötvös’s opera Sleepless, commissioned by the Berlin Staatsoper, will receive its Hungarian premiere, while concert performers will include pianist David Fray and the Liszt Chamber Orchestra, as well as star cellist István Várdai and celebrated violinist Kristóf Baráti.

Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra will perform Bach’s B Minor Mass, while the Batsheva Dance Company will present three choreographies by Ohad Naharin, Csaba Káel, the chief executive of the Palace of Arts, the festival’s organiser, told a news conference.

Celebrated trumpeter Boban Marković will perform with his brass band together with the Székesfehérvár Ballet Theatre, while the Branford Marsalis Quartet and the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble will also perform.

A love story worthy of a Hollywood romance and a thought-provoking psychological thriller unfold at the world premieres of the new one-act operas by György Selmeczi and János Vajda. Royal Highness and The Verdict are to be performed for the first time on 11 April 2026 at the Hungarian State Opera’s Eiffel Art Studios, conducted by Kálmán Szennai and directed by Máté Szabó. The premiere performance is part of the Bartók Spring International Arts Weeks.



Master MS & His Age, Museum of Fine Arts

On display until 20 July. The exhibition showcases one of the most significant yet enigmatic figures of medieval Hungarian art, known as Master MS. At the heart of the monographic exhibition is Master MS’s most famous work: the former high altarpiece of Saint Catherine’s Church in Selmecbánya (now Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia).
