Hungarian Opposition Party DK: Fidesz Ready for Post-Election Austerity

The government has turned to the European Commission with a request for recovery funds that have been withheld due to concerns over the rule of law in Hungary, Anett Bősz, DK’s parliamentary group leader, told a press briefing.
But if the government stayed in power after the April 3 election, Hungary would not get hold of the relevant funding, she insisted, adding the government had rejected the EU credit line last year on its insistence that the economy was solid enough to recover from the coronavirus crisis on its own.
Bősz said Viktor Orbán, the prime minister, had been locked in a fight with Brussels, while corruption at home would have in any case hampered Hungary’s ability to tap the EU funds.
But without the funds, Hungary would be forced to adopt austerity measures, she said, adding that only an opposition win would enable the country to drawn down the EU credit line.
