By 2025, Shell will install EV chargers at more than 100 Tesco store locations. The partnership supports Shell’s target to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050. Tesco has a commitment to reach net-zero in their own operations by 2035, and across their whole footprint by 2050.
In the first phase of the partnership, existing charge points installed by Tesco will become part of the Shell Recharge network, and Shell will install further charging points, totaling more than 100 Tesco locations over the next three years.
A combination of 22kW and 50 kW fast-charging points are expected to be installed at Tesco car parks and will enable customers to conveniently recharge their EVs while shopping. All charging points will be powered by 100% renewable electricity.
Commenting on the announcement, Sarolta Vecsey, head of the mobility business unit of Shell Hungary said, "At Shell, our goal is to ensure that EV charging is comfortable and convenient for customers.
By providing them with the opportunity to charge their car at a parking place during another activity, in this case, their daily shopping, they get fast and easy-to-use service, tailored to the specific needs of electric vehicle users.
Thanks to the partnership with Tesco, we will be able to expand an efficient nationwide EV charging network in a short time period."
Zsolt Pálinkás, CEO of Tesco Hungary added, "Tesco has led the way in reducing emissions. We were the first FTSE 100 company to commit to science-based targets in line with the Paris Agreement's 1.5 C target. In 2021/22, we achieved an absolute reduction in our operations of 52% against a 2015 baseline.
Expanding our existing e-charger network is part of our wider commitment to addressing the environmental challenges that matter most to our customers, colleagues, and communities. Our EV network provides a sustainable choice for our customers and charging while they shop is another little help to make their lives easier."
Shell currently operates more than 100,000 public and private charging points worldwide and plans to operate over 500,000 by 2025. Shell Hungary will continue to increase its Shell Recharge branded EV charging network at both Shell stations and other locations in Hungary as well.
EV charging is currently available at nine Shell forecourts, including six Shell Recharge locations and three Ionity locations.
The Shell Recharge network in Hungary supports Shell's ambition to become a global leader in EV charging while building on Shell's Powering Progress strategy, in which Shell aims to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050 and to help its customers decarbonize through the energy transition by providing low-carbon or carbon-neutral fuels, according to the press release.
