Expats Eligible for Top Opera Post in Budapest
The State Opera is inviting non-Hungarians to apply to become the next head of the institution for a five-year term beginning in August.

Hungarian citizenship was a requirement in the first, failed, tender, but is no longer essential.

However, applicants must “represent and research the traditions of Hungarian national opera performance.” Bids must be submitted by March 13.

The Culture and Innovation Ministry announced in December that it would invite bids again for the post of general director of the Opera after a previous tender ended without any result and the ministry declared it invalid.

Culture and Innovation Minister János Csák said in an interview in early February that the two bids in the tender were too few, and said the new tender would be published in English.

As is common knowledge, Telex writes, the current general director Szilveszter Ókovács is known for supporting Fidesz. A spokesperson for the Opera has said that Ókovács will again bid for the post.
