33% of Hungarians Live Below Subsistence Level
Some 30% of Hungarians were living below the subsistence level of Ft 124,000 a month in 2020, according to the calculations of Policy Agenda, the consultancy told RTL Klub.

Of that sum, an average of Ft 30,000 is spent on food.

The subsistence level is Ft 114,000 a month for pensioners and Ft 308,000 for a family of two adults and two children.

The Central Statistics Office ceased publication of subsistence-level data in 2015.

Most people who live below the subsistence level reside in small towns and villages.

Pál Belyó, the research director of Policy Agenda, and a former department head at the Central Statistics Office, said the data show that the standard of living in Hungary is deteriorating.
