Damage Caused by Foreign Football Fans in Budapest Runs Into Millions
The Sixth District has presented a Ft 4 million invoice to the National Event Organising Agency for repairing the damage caused by fans in Budapest for the final of football’s Europa League cup on May 31.

The district demands that the organisation cover the costs of restoring Liszt Ferenc tér and the neighbouring streets, where fans of the Roma and Sevilla teams caused considerable damage.

Mayor Tamás Soproni said the biggest cost is the replacement of flowers and other plants, estimated at Ft 3.5 million. An additional Ft 500,000 is needed for the costs of repairing the street furniture and for detergents.

He said the district was not informed that Liszt Ferenc tér had been designated as a meeting point for fans, and that the organisers of the event did not request the district’s assistance in providing enhanced law enforcement or public maintenance personnel on the day of the match.
