New Wind-Speed Record Set in Budapest

A fast-moving cold front brought strong winds to the capital early on Monday, with a gust at János Hill exceeding the previous record for this date in Budapest.

HungaroMet recorded a maximum gust of 92.9 km/h at this high point in the early hours of 21 September, setting a new daily wind-speed record for Budapest. The previous record, 90.0 km/h, was recorded at the same location in 2017.

The cold front caused winds to turn northwesterly and then northerly, with storm-force gusts recorded across a large area. The strongest winds were associated with the passage of the front, followed by a noticeable drop in temperatures.

The new record refers specifically to the maximum gust recorded at the János Hill weather station and is not the average or sustained wind speed across Budapest.



János Hill is the highest point in Budapest, rising to 527 metres above sea level in the Buda Hills. 

Located in the city’s 12th District, it is a popular destination for hiking and panoramic views, with the Elizabeth Lookout Tower at its summit offering views across Budapest and the surrounding countryside. The hill is surrounded by extensive woodland.
