Update: High Danube Temperature Causes Hungary's Nuclear Plant to Further Reduce Output
Since Tuesday, the Paks nuclear plant has reduced its output by 560 Mgws due to rising temperatures of the Danube river, the water of which is used for cooling its system.

The National Atomic Energy Agency (OAH) said on its website that the output was reduced by 320 megawatts on Tuesday, followed by another, 240 megawatt reduction on Wednesday.

The measure has been necessitated by environmental regulations and has not impacted nuclear safety, OAH said. According to the plant’s internal regulations, output is reduced by 80 megawatts/0.1 C above 29.5 C of water temperature, the plant said earlier.

Hungary’s Paks plant on Thursday reduced its output due to rising temperatures of the River Danube whose water is used to cool the nuclear facility.

The plant said on its website that 29.72 C had been measured in the river, and the output of the plant’s second, third, and fourth blocks were reduced by a combined 240 megawatts.

The website also noted that under effective regulations the maximum temperature of the water used for cooling the system is 30 C.

According to the plant’s internal regulations, output is reduced by 80 megawatts/0.1 C above 29.5 C of water temperature, the website said.
