The metropolitan council’s fifth participatory budget received over 730 submissions by the Jan 31 deadline, the office said in a statement, adding that the ideas included plans aimed at supporting bicycle and pedestrian mobility, green developments, community building, sports, recycling and making better use of the riverbanks.
Of the submissions, the 300 most popular ones will advance to the expert evaluations stage. Residents can express support for their preferred ideas on the otlet.budapest.hu website between Feb 6 and 21, the statement said.
Community voting is expected to be held in the autumn after the expert evaluations, it added.
The city council will spend up to a total one billion forints (EUR 2.5m) on implementing residents’ urban development ideas, the office said.
Budapest Awarded EU Funds for New Bicycle Lanes
The application of the Budapest transport centre BKK for EU funds to develop bicycle lanes has been approved, mayor Gergely Karácsony announced on Facebook.
The bicycle lanes on the Nagykörút will be physically protected and traffic safety on Üllői út and Váci út will be improved, he wrote.
Implementation of the plan could, however, take years, as a public procurement tender on planning is expected to start in the second quarter of 2025, Karácsony added.
The public procurement procedure for the design is expected to be announced in the second quarter.
The construction plans are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2026, Karácsony added.
