Former Hungarian Gov't Official Sentenced to 6.5 Years in Prison for 'Grave Crimes'

A Budapest court has sentenced Janos Nagy, a former agriculture ministry deputy state secretary, to 6 years 6 months in prison for accepting bribes and forging official documents in a non-binding ruling that also bans Nagy from public affairs.

The second defendant was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for 5 years. The court handed down a 2.5-year prison sentence to the third defendant with a fine of 2.4 million forints (EUR 5,900), while the fourth defendant was sentenced to 2 years in prison together with a fine of 3 million forints.

According to the charges, Nagy and the second defendant agreed in 2020 that the then-deputy state secretary would aid the second defendant, an entrepreneur, in acquiring land and in winning tenders and 830 million forints in non-refundable funding.

In exchange, Nagy received a 5 percent share in the company. Meanwhile, Nagy also agreed with the third defendant, a subordinate of his at the ministry, to acquire undue advantages in another tender.

The court saw as an aggravating circumstance that Nagy used his influence as a government official when committing grave crimes.

The accused deny the charges and have appealed for an acquittal.
