Intelligence Angencies in Hungary Engage with US Authorities Regarding Rogán
Hungarian intelligence agencies have reached out to U.S. counterparts regarding the case of Antal Rogán, according to Zoltán Sas, chair of Hungary’s parliamentary National Security Committee.

Speaking to Hungarian news site Telex following the committee’s Tuesday meeting, Sas, who is a member of opposition party Jobbik, confirmed that the inclusion of Rogán on a sanctions list was carried out under U.S. legal procedures. Hungarian authorities do not dispute the legality of this action.

“The Hungarian side requested any available information supporting the decision from its American partners, but the U.S. was unable to provide such information,” Sas said, summarizing details from the committee meeting.

During the meeting, Hungarian intelligence officials also noted the emergence of a broader dynamic involving identifiable actors on the international stage. According to their observations, these individuals are allegedly working to undermine Hungarian-U.S. relations and hinder their effectiveness, even before a potential new U.S. administration takes office.

According to the report, Sas declined to provide further details, citing the classified nature of much of the discussion. He hinted, however, that certain regional states or entities may be leveraging their intelligence services to disrupt a potential rapprochement between Hungary and the U.S., especially before Donald Trump’s administration were to come into power.

Such geopolitical maneuvering aligns with the broader context of strained U.S.-Hungary relations, which have deteriorated in part due to Hungary’s policies toward Russia, the report adds. The Biden administration, under which Rogán was sanctioned, has been critical of Hungary’s stance on Moscow.

The Hungarian intelligence community’s request for information from the U.S. is notable, as any findings would likely be shared with Antal Rogán himself. As a minister, Rogán oversees Hungary’s civilian intelligence services.
