Updated: Food Markups Cap Reduces Prices in Hungary by 18%
- 9 May 2025 9:13 AM
Robert Zsigo said the 10pc markup cap had reduced prices of 872 products since its rollout four weeks earlier.
He added that the prices of 21 products had fallen by more than 50pc, while the prices of 103 products had dropped at least 40pc.
Zsigo said that 416 shops had been checked for compliance, so far, and no violations had been found.
Update:
The government will apply a cap on markups to some household products, Gergely Gulyas, the head of the Prime Minister's Office, said at a weekly press briefing on Thursday.
After a discussion of economic issues at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Gulyas said the government had decided to mandate a 15pc cap on markups on more than 1,000 household products in 30 categories. He added that a cap on markups on a range of food products, rolled out earlier, had yielded positive results.
Gulyas said the government has submitted a balanced budget bill for 2026, one that contained resources for family subsidies, economic development and pensions even during a difficult period.
He said the government's 2026 budget bill was based on channeling resources to support Hungarian families, not Ukraine. The bill earmarks HUF 4,800bn for family policies, with over HUF 800bn allocated for maintaining the regulated utilities price scheme for households, he added.
He said Hungary was undertaking Europe's biggest tax reduction programme, highlighting HUF 320bn for a personal income tax exemption for mothers of two and three, and HUF 290bn for the doubling of tax allowances for families with children.
The biggest budget line, he said, remained spending on pensioners, including the usual pension increase, an annual bonus and a growth-linked premium.
The budget also allocates HUF 5,500bn for economic development, in addition to resources for a minimum wage increase and a bonus for Hungarians in uniform, he added.
