New System for Debt Collection in Hungary Proposed by Opposition DK
The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has proposed that debts "of which debtors have not been notified" should be forgiven after three months.

Gergely Arato, DK's deputy group leader, told an online press conference on Sunday that liquidators and debt recovery agencies sought to "collect old debts, several times the original sum", adding that "a large number of those claims has no foundation whatever".

According to DK's proposal, banks, liquidators and other service providers should be allowed three months to present all evidence for their claims, while debtors should be granted appropriate legal remedy against those claims.

Arato also said that only the original debt amount and "a realistic, moderate interest" should be claimed rather than "a multiplied total".

DK is in the process of preparing a package of proposals to change the system of debt collection in Hungary, in support of "those that are unlawfully plundered and cheated, those that are stripped of their hard earned wages or pensions by large companies or even state organisations," Arato said.
