Updated: Momentum Party Not Running in Hungary’s 2026 Election
The opposition Momentum party will not run in next year's parliamentary election to promote a government change, the party's national board decided.

"A change of government is not the goal but a step toward a regime change," Momentum said in a statement.

The original purpose of Momentum was to "complete the political regime change and build an open and colourful country that rewards talent and hard work," they said, adding that meeting that objective required "the fall of the Orban regime" and "ensuring that it cannot return in a future election".

According to Momentum, once a new government takes over "parliament should ensure the independence of the judiciary in the shortest time possible and pass new media and electoral laws."

Momentum leader: Prosecutor obeying political orders in bid to suspend immunity of 6 MPs

The public prosecutor is kowtowing to his political masters by initiating the suspension of the immunity of six members of parliament, the leader of the opposition Momentum parliamentary group said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, adding that the intention was "to intimidate and deter those who dare to stand up to the regime".

"It sends a message ... to anyone who dares to stand up to the regime... even if they do so to protect our fundamental rights," David Bedo said, adding that the MPs in question had "dared to criticise the regime" at a series of public demonstrations.

He accused "the ruling majority" of deciding such cases based on political interests rather than "the law or truth". Accordingly, the parliamentary majority "is expected to vote for the suspension [of their immunity] in this case, too," he said.

"[T]hey cannot intimidate us. The right to assemble is not a privilege but a right that belongs to everyone," he said.

Bedo added the fact that "this regime" was conducting a "political witch hunt" suggested "it is already living its last days".
