Passenger Traffic Now Running Normally at Budapest Airport
- 8 Jul 2025 8:23 AM
Further thunderstorms are expected during the day, therefore, Budapest Airport kindly asks passengers to regularly check the departure and arrival time of their flight and to leave for the airport on time due to the rapidly changing weather conditions.
Thanks to Budapest Airport’s quick response, the normal flow of traffic was fully restored at the airport by this morning after yesterday’s thunderstorm. Both the arrivals and departure levels of Terminal 2A are back in operation thanks to the rapid damage repair following yesterday’s water leakage.
Thanks to the accurate weather forecast, our staff has prepared for the heavy rain that reached the airport a few minutes before 10:00 today and it is currently not causing any disruption at the airport. Traffic is running according to schedule, with no delays at the moment.
The repair of the remaining storm damage is in progress and information for passengers is still regularly updated in the terminal and on the airport’s communication channels.
As thunderstorms are expected to continue today, Budapest Airport is prepared for the management of another possible storm while maintaining normal operations. The operator’s staff are present at the terminal in increased numbers, and they constantly monitor the forecasts of HungaroControl and the meteorological services, doing their utmost to ensure the safety of passengers and air traffic.

The runways were closed and the airport's operations were suspended "for safety reasons", the operator said in a statement.
The departure hall of Terminal 2A was evacuated as it was partially flooded and all passengers were being checked in at Terminal 2B earlier in the day.
The storm has also affected surrounding highways, and passengers are advised to keep up to date with traffic changes.
Budapest Airport is updating information across its communications platforms continuously, the statement said.
Budapest Airport added that temporary airspace restrictions could be introduced and flights may need to make detours to reach their destinations.
HungaroControl and Budapest Airport are asking passengers to check flight details before setting off.
Meanwhile, the storm sweeping through the country is causing significant damage to the rail track around Lake Balaton, rail operator Mavinform said.
Stormy winds of 150-170 kmh tore off overhead power cables on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, while trees fell onto the railway track on the southern shore, and the overhead cables have been damaged too.
E.ON electricity provider said on Facebook that the storms had caused power outages in Baranya, Fejer, Pest, Somogy, Tolna, Vas, Veszprem and Zala counties in the western and southern parts of the country, while electricity and gas company MVM said 150,000 of its customers were left without power, mostly in the Baja, Kecskemet, and Szeged areas, in southern and south-eastern Hungary, as well as around Gyongyos and Eger, in the north.
Both companies assured customers that their technicians were working hard to restore services as soon as possible.
MVM said the damage had been caused by hurricane-force winds blowing at over 100 km/h, and the downpours and hailstorms in which power lines were broken by falling tree trunks and branches.
Janos Lazar, the minister of construction and transport, noted the "huge destruction" the storms left behind, and declared the area around Budapest "the site of railway disaster".
The minister visited the headquarters of the national railway and coach company MAV-Volan and said the storms had affected "all vehicles and tracks, roads, railways and the airport", adding that several roads have been closed down and the airports's operations were temporarily suspended.
The minister said restoring railway services could require a few days, and warned passengers to get information about the actual services before setting off. He added that the transport company has mobilised over 200 buses to support railway services. "We will not leave anyone by the road ... everybody will be transported," Lazar said.
He added that "very strong" storms are expected in the next few days, adding that "such a serious challenge has not faced Hungary in the past decades affecting railway services". "I ask my fellow politicians and people in public life for a ceasefire ... what is needed now is support for MAV-Volan employees to restore services as soon as possible," he added.
According to Lazar, Hungary's railways suffered the greatest damage in Budapest, around Lake Balaton in the west, and in the Debrecen-Puspokladany area in the east.
