Why Riding Electric Scooters in Hungary May Cost More Than You Think
While electric scooters are not involved in an unusually high number of accidents, the severity of the resulting damage can be considerable, according to a recent report by vg.hu, citing data from Allianz Hungária insurance company.

Over the past year, the average claim payout for incidents involving micromobility vehicles—such as e-scooters — was approximately HUF 710,000 (around EUR 1,779). Some claims, however, reached as high as HUF 1.6 million (EUR 4,007).

The breakdown of damage types reveals that:

  • 92% of claims were for vehicle damage,

  • 5% for property damage, and

  • only 3% involved personal injury.

Among the personal injury cases, both minor and serious injuries were recorded. Most property-related incidents took place in Budapest.

Interestingly, most insurance policies for micromobility vehicles were taken out by residents outside the capital, and the majority (79%) of policyholders were over 35, with 1 in 5 riders aged 55 or older.

Allianz also highlighted growing concerns about rider behaviour.

Many users are unaware of basic traffic laws, with frequent reports of:

  • riding under the influence,

  • running red lights,

  • wearing headphones while riding, and

  • using sidewalks improperly.

Accidents often occur near parked cars or at intersections, and in many cases, riders leave the scene without exchanging information.

One of the key challenges is the lack of licence plates or a national registry for scooters, which makes verifying insurance coverage difficult. When police are involved, claims take longer to process — a situation that could often be avoided if riders carried a standard blue-and-yellow accident report form (commonly used in Hungary), or used the electronic claim app developed by the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies (MABISZ).

On a positive note, Hungary is expected to update its traffic regulations soon, with the aim of introducing clearer rules around micromobility vehicles, including electric scooters.
