LEGO Inaugurates HUF 54 Billion Expansion in Hungary - World's 2nd Largest LEGO Plant
- 1 Oct 2025 6:31 AM
The investment, which expanded packaging and manufacturing capacity and created 300 jobs, was supported with a HUF 4.3bn government grant, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said at the ceremony.
The base in Nyiregyhaza is now the world's second biggest LEGO plant and the only one in Europe where all manufacturing processes are present, the minister said.
Szijjarto said production capacity increased by 30pc. He noted that revenue of the base increased to over HUF 100bn last year and headcount will reach 5,000 next year.
The number of solar panels supporting the plant's operation is expected to soon increase to 35,000 from the current 24,000, he added.
Bilateral trade between Hungary and Denmark rose to a new record and Hungarian exports to Denmark increased by 15pc this year, Szijjarto said. In the past ten years, the government supported investments worth HUF 230bn by seventeen Danish companies, creating 4,500 jobs, he added.
The area of the base has more than doubled to 262,000sqm from 120,000sqm at the time of its inauguration in 2024, LEGO said in a statement.
The LEGO Group aims to reduce its reliance on fossil energy and absolute carbon dioxide emission compared to 2019 levels. In the next two years, it will build the infrastructure and technology necessary to using geothermal energy to heat the base in Nyiregyhaza.
The closed system, in which pumped-out water will be pumped back near the extraction site, will become fully operational by 2028, it said.
