'Touch of Humility' Exhibition at Bible Museum in Budapest
- 8 Sep 2025 4:38 PM
The exhibition will be opened by art historian Péter Molnos, and the Dalinda singing group will perform at the opening, which will start at 5 p.m.
The opening of the exhibition will be held within the framework of the Ars Sacra Festival, the organizers said in a press statement sent to MTI.
Gyula Kemény's collection is today one of the most significant private collections, whose works of art have been on display in several galleries and museums in recent years.
When you become acquainted with a collection, you find that the works also tell a story about the collector himself.
In this case, we can experience why Gyula Kemény saw a particular painting or a significant era of fine art as important in terms of expanding his collection.
"At this exhibition of the Bible Museum, the visitor receives as a gift this world created with extraordinary sensitivity. He can delve into the secret that captivated the collector as well," they say in the press statement.
Gyula Kemény graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in painting and restoration between 1972 and 1977, then started working as a restorer, and is currently one of the most significant experts in this field in Hungary.
He began his collection by chance, with a purchase intended to help a friend. However, his direct work with paintings enriches his collecting activity with a unique perspective, sensitivity, and value judgment, the statement says.
Gyula Kemény repeatedly mentioned in interviews that the works of the artists from Nagybánya, the modern artists from Nagybánya, were the starting point for his collection. All this happened at a time when Hungarian painting in Transylvania was still on the verge of real discovery.
After this, he began collecting works by those who, at the turn of the century - often visiting Paris - brought home with them the fresh air and creative vision that laid the foundation for modern Hungarian painting in these decades. The majority of the collection comes from the members of the group of Eight painters, but there is also a strong presence of prominent representatives of the Great Plain school.
The exhibition features works by Vilmos Aba-Novák, Imre Ámos, Jenő Barcsay, Róbert Berény, Tibor Boromisza, Dezső Czigány, Gyula Derkovits, Béni Ferenczy, Lajos Gulácsy, Béla Iványi Grünwald, Dávid Jándi, József Klein, Vince Korda, János Mattis Teutsch, Ödön Márffy, István Nagy, Oszkár Nagy, Károly Patkó, József Pechán, Izsák Perlmutter, Vilmos Perlrott-Csaba, Vladimir Szabó, István Szőnyi, Menyhért Tóth, Tibor Vilt and Sándor Ziffer.
On September 26th, from 5 p.m., as part of the Researchers' Night, the Bible Museum will organize a program related to the exhibition, where visitors can meet art collector Gyula Kemény and learn about his collecting activities and the history of the collection in an informal conversation.
The exhibition can be viewed until November 25, Tuesday to Friday between 10 am and 5 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm at the Bible Museum of the Ráday Collection of the Reformed Church District of Dunamelléki.
