Good News for Home Owners in Hungary: Property Transfer Tax Exemption Period Extended
Effective January 1 this year, property purchasers can claim property transfer tax relief on a replacement purchase if they sold their previous home within five years before the acquisition or within one year after it.

A recent amendment extended the exemption period to five years from the initial three.

The one-year post-purchase window remains unchanged.

The tax base will continue to be the difference between the market values of the two properties.

Without relief the standard property transfer tax stands at 4% of the acquired property's market value, calculated without deducting any encumbrances.
