Cash to Clicks: Digital Payments in Hungary Blossom – Mobile Accelerates, Fintech Significant
An increase in the number of Hungarians who pay using their mobile phones is driving financial digitalisation in the country, a survey by Mastercard shows.

The representative survey of Hungarians between 18 and 65 with bank accounts and living in urban areas shows 48pc of people make mobile payments, up from 41pc one year earlier and more than double the 22pc rate six years earlier.

Still, 44pc of the surveyed group insist on getting a physical bank card.

One in five Hungarians reported using a fintech card, such as ones issued by Revolut or Wise.

Three-fourths of the people surveyed pay their bills electronically and 72pc pay with their bank cards at POS terminals.

The rate of people who withdraw cash from ATMs was stable at 94pc.

Around 28pc of people have used QR codes to make online payments.

Just 27pc of SZEP voucher card holders have digitalised their cards.

The survey shows nine in ten of the people make purchases online, and 26pc of those buy on a weekly basis.

Around 39pc regularly place orders with webshops abroad. The share of online payments made with bank cards has climbed to 77pc.

About 78pc of the people surveyed use mobile banking applications.
