'We Must Not Let Hatred, Fear-Mongering Reign in Hungary,' Says Orbán After Shots Fired
"We must not let hatred, fear mongering reign in Hungary," Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said late on Saturday, referring to an incident earlier in the day, in which shots were fired at a volunteer activist of his ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance in Szentendre, north of Budapest.

"We must urgently put an end to this," the prime minister said in a video uploaded to Facebook after phoning the activist as well as government spokesperson Eszter Vitalyos, Szentendre's MP.

Earlier on Saturday, Vitalyos reported the incident and said that the man had been collecting signatures door to door in her support. The activist rang a doorbell and introduced himself when somebody fired a gas pistol at him from a window of the building. The man remained unharmed in the incident.

Fidesz activist assaulted with gas pistol

A gas pistol was fired at a door-to-door activist of the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat parties in Szentendre, north of Budapest, government spokesperson Eszter Vitalyos said in a video uploaded to Facebook on Saturday.

Vitalyos suggested that the "shocking" incident had been motivated by "the aggression and hatred ... the Tisza Party has brought about".

In the video the activist, who was unhurt in the incident, said he had rang the doorbell at a condominium and said he was collecting signatures to support Vitalyos, after which "somebody leaned out of a window, shot at me and I ran away."

Vitalyos advised the man to file a criminal complaint with the police.
