Magyar to Hold Talks in Brussels on Weds on Securing EU Funding
Peter Magyar, the prime minister-elect, will travel to Brussels on Wednesday to hold informal talks on restoring Hungary's access to European Union funds.

"We have no time to waste," Magyar, the Tisza party's leader, said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Magyar held high-level talks with European Commission leaders last weekend in Budapest.

On Apr 17, he said that even before the new government is formed, efforts are under way to map out the conditions under which parliament can legislate within a tight deadline to secure the release of EU funds.

Some of the European institutions' demands for change have already been met, while others remain unresolved, including anti-corruption measures, judicial independence, press freedom, ending state funding for "propaganda", and restoring university autonomy, he noted.

Billions of euros must be used or tied down by Aug 31, he said, a deadline which was fast approaching.

On Monday, Magyar said he hoped to sign an agreement between May 15 and 20 that would enable Hungary to amend the necessary legislation by Aug 31, so that "the monies Hungary is entitled to can be transferred".
