Tesco to Close Major Budapest Hypermarket
Tesco was quick to emphasize that these closures do not signal a retreat from the Hungarian market. The company’s nationwide network remains extensive, consisting of nearly 200 stores, roughly half of which are large-scale hypermarkets.

Recent activity suggests the retailer is currently focused on modernizing its existing portfolio rather than maintaining underperforming older sites:

Renovations: Nearly 40 stores underwent significant upgrades last year.
New Openings: Two new locations were added to the network recently.
New Concepts: The company launched its first "Premier" brand local store, a format expected to grow this year alongside further modernization projects.

Impact on Staff

For expats and locals employed at these locations, the company stated its intention to retain its workforce.

Tesco aims to offer alternative positions within its other Budapest branches to all employees affected by the closures.
