The Transport and Investment Ministry has signed the funding agreement securing the necessary EU resources for the project. BKK is participating in the development as a consortium partner of the ministry, providing professional support for its implementation.
The development will create a new tram connection from Szent Gellert Square through the University of Technology and Economics waterfront to the Kopaszi Dam area, improving rail-based transport links between South Buda, the university quarter and the continuously developing Danube riverside areas.
A 2.8-kilometre-long, double-track tram line will be built, along with seven new, barrier-free tram stops, providing direct rail-based connections to the Kopaszi Dam, the BudaPart district, Infopark, and university campuses.
The project also includes a partially grass-covered tram track, a new riverside promenade and cycling infrastructure along the Danube, as well as tree and shrub planting along the tram line. The new line will also connect to tram line 1 and the new railway stop in the Nadorkert area.

Preparatory work can begin in autumn 2026 after the funding agreement takes effect, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
The investment is being carried out under the Buda Integrated Tram Network Phase II project with EU funding and co-financing from the Hungarian state. The non-repayable support amounts to 32.32 billion forints.
The development will lay the foundations for further expansion of the South Buda tram network. BKK is preparing to develop the tram network along Budafok Road as part of its own project, which could create a new rail-based connection from the Dombovari Road area to Savoya Park.
