Spring in Hungary: Car-Free Rakpart Season Returns to Budapest
Budapest's lower Pest embankment has reopened as a car-free zone on select days, signaling spring's arrival with one of the city's most beloved traditions.

This Danube riverside stretch now welcomes pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized users, turning the road into a chill public space for locals, expats, and visitors.

The seasonal launch timed perfectly with the long weekend around Hungary’s March 15 national holiday this year, kicking off months of car-free access to promote waterfront enjoyment.

From mid-March through autumn, Pest-side embankment sections close to traffic on weekends and public holidays. Residents can walk, cycle, skate, or relax riverside without cars buzzing by.

The car-free zone typically runs from Margaret Bridge to near Elizabeth Bridge, delivering stunning, uninterrupted Danube views of Buda Castle and Parliament.

It transforms into a vibrant promenade where crowds gather for sunsets, workouts, friend meetups, or riverside picnics.

In recent years, the Rakpart program has grown beyond road closures. Expect community activities and pop-ups like outdoor seating, sports zones, cultural events, live music, or yoga sessions along the route.

City leaders champion it as a way to reconnect people with the Danube and revitalize the central waterfront.

Sunny spring weekends pack the area with walkers, cyclists, and families, converting a busy road into a lively urban promenade.

For many Budapestians, Rakpart's return unofficially launches the outdoor season. With rising temperatures and longer days, it's prime for river views, fresh air, and a relaxed vibe along one of the city's scenic gems.
