Orban, the foreign minister and deputy PM of the Tisza government, also responded to the letter, in which the authors accused her of being unfaithful to the previous cabinet and said "I have not changed; the regime had - the regime that you are trying to defend to the end."

In her Facebook post, Orban said she had observed "from within" that "professionalism was replaced by loyalty, national interest by personal interests, working for the country by greed to obtain wealth and privileges."

"There comes a point when an honest person needs to decide whether to continue and assist, or say no and take personal consequences," Orban said in her post.

"Are those who prefer their country to a political community the traitors or those, as members of the Fidesz government, who actively contributed to ransacking, destroying, and breaking this wonderful country?" Orban asked.

"Many of us have been ashamed in recent years ... many had the humiliating feeling that Hungary is no longer associated with its Nobel laureates, Puskas or Bartok, nor with hard work and a love of freedom, but the anti-European stance of Viktor Orban's government, corruption, oligarchs, and unscrupulous greed," she said.

"The question is not who stays faithful to a political side but whether you can stay faithful to Hungary. I want to work so that I can give a positive answer to the latter question every day," she said.

The prime minister said on his Facebook page that "those are now making slanderous remarks who used to offer the country on a silver platter to foreigners, those that sought assistance from Russian hackers and foreign agents."

Magyar called on authors of the unsigned letter "not to slander Anita Orban ... but tell your cowardly fleeing boss ... to gather his courage, lay his cards on the table and take the consequences for what he has done."
