Heat Records Smashed in Hungary as Temperatures Soar

Hungary's national and Budapest heat records tumbled on Saturday, with temperatures hitting 40C in Budakalasz, near the capital, the national weather service HungaroMet said on Sunday.

The 40C reading in Budakalasz shattered the previous record of 37.5C set in Orkeny in 1994. Budapest's Lagymanyos district also saw a new high of 39.8C, surpassing the 36.5C recorded in 1935.

Early on Sunday, Boda registered 26.3C, the highest early-morning temperature for this date, beating the 24.5C recorded in Gyor-Likocs in 2019.

By 9am on Sunday, temperatures had already reached 30C almost nationwide, with forecasts suggesting the 1935 daily record of 39.9C in Szerep would also fall.
