Low Green Space Per Capita in Budapest Drives Transformation of City Park

He noted that removing the foundations and rubble of demolished buildings was a major project requiring adequate preparation time.
One of Budapest's biggest problems was that, even by European standards, the amount of green space per capita was particularly low, he said in a previous post. Yet the city's second-largest public park had for almost a decade looked "like an abandoned construction site".
Buildings planned for the park were never built and the areas allocated for them remain cordoned off, "disfiguring" the middle of the park, he added.
Vitezy noted that at its meeting on Wednesday, the cabinet decided to remove the cordons and begin turning the previously closed-off areas into parkland.
No further buildings will be added to the park, but the government has decided on a plan to completely renovate Heroes' Square and to ensure a car-free City Park.
"Our principle in this matter is also clear: we will not demolish what has already been built, and we will not leave eyesores behind us. City Park must be renovated, but it must be renovated as a park. There may be a need for new cultural buildings, but not in Budapest's most important public park but in the brownfield development areas, which in any case need to be put to use as soon as possible to ease the housing crisis," Vitezy said.
