Annual Balaton Swim Faces Low Water - Special Measures Planned
The unusually low water level of Lake Balaton is creating some logistical challenges ahead of the 44th Lidl Balaton Swim on 18 July, although organisers say participants can expect the swimming experience itself to remain unchanged.

The Budapest Sports Office (BSI), which organises the annual event, is preparing for what is expected to be the largest open-water swim in recent years. Registration has already reached full capacity.

The main challenge is at the starting point in Révfülöp on the lake's northern shore, where the shallow water currently prevents the small motorboats used to transport participants' belongings from approaching the shoreline safely.

To overcome the problem, organisers will construct a temporary pier extending into the lake, allowing the boats to dock in deeper water. Specialists are currently determining exactly how long the structure needs to be to ensure sufficient depth.

According to the BSI, these measures are purely logistical and will not affect either the luggage transport system or the swim itself.

The distance swimmers will cover across the lake remains unchanged. However, because of the lower water level, participants are expected to reach shallow water sooner than usual as they approach the southern shore at Balatonboglár.

The section where swimmers can stand on the lake bed is already around 100 metres longer than in previous years, and with several weeks remaining before the event, that distance may increase further if water levels continue to fall.

Participants will once again be able to use the free BAHART ferry service and the event's luggage transport system. Personal belongings will be transferred across the lake separately, ensuring they arrive at the finish before most swimmers.

According to the BSI, the operation involves two vehicles and four motorboats making more than 30 return journeys throughout the event.

The luggage service has been organised to suit participants travelling in either direction. Swimmers starting in Révfülöp will collect their belongings after finishing in Balatonboglár, while those travelling from the southern shore can leave their bags in Balatonboglár before crossing to the start by ferry.

Luggage storage facilities will also be available at both locations for participants returning to their starting point after completing the swim.

Cyclists have not been overlooked either, with a dedicated bicycle storage area available for those arriving by bike.
