Magyar wished his assailant "good health" and later addressed the incident at a press briefing, saying that his government represented every Hungarian.

He also asked for "understanding and solace" for those "unable to release their pent-up frustration", adding: "They are not to blame for the hatred in their hearts, but rather the propaganda carried out with public funds by the previous government. Fortunately, its traces are fading in Hungary, and we are on the right path towards a humane and functional Hungary."

Ministry: Standby police, TEK continue to protect premier

The protection of the prime minister continues to be provided by the Standby Police, with the support of the anti-terrorism organisation TEK, the interior ministry said on Friday, commenting on news reports that the task would be taken over by TEK from Friday.

The transfer of personal protection duties is part of the ongoing restructuring of law enforcement agencies, the ministry said.

Under a draft law currently before parliament, personal protection is expected to fall under the responsibility of the reorganised TEK, which will operate under the National Police Headquarters (ORFK) from October.

The changes will take effect after the law enters into force, likely after Oct 1, the ministry said.

PM not seeking higher protection after passerby spits at him

Prime Minister Peter Magyar has said on Facebook he will not ask for higher personal protection after a passerby spat at him before a press conference on Wednesday.

The incident happened az Nyugati railway station, when the prime minister was on his way to a press conference presenting a railway development scheme.

He wished his assailant "good health" and said later that such people "are not to blame for the hatred in their hearts, but rather the propaganda carried out with public funds by the previous government."

The government's press office said the prime minister would not press charges.
