Upgraded Danube Beach in Budapest Reopens - 'Swim at Own Risk'
Urban river swimming has taken another step forward in the capital with the official seasonal opening of the Duna-fürdő Árasztó-part public beach in District XI.

Welcoming visitors throughout the summer months from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, the designated swimming area now provides a 100-meter-long, 120-centimeter-deep zone for swimming, backed by rigorous testing that confirms excellent water quality.

Ildikó Szűts, CEO of Budapest Spas and Thermal Baths (BGYH), noted that the river beach initially operated as a pilot program last year.

The initiative proved incredibly popular among Budapest residents looking for an authentic outdoor dip, prompting organizers to significantly scale up the facilities.

Instead of the modest 20-meter trial strip utilized last summer, the beach has been expanded to a spacious 100-meter stretch of the Danube bank for the 2026 season.

Management has implemented several precautionary measures to ensure that the community can enjoy the water in a secure and relaxed environment.

BGYH’s accredited water quality testing laboratory monitored the site closely for weeks leading up to the launch, and the resulting measurements consistently verified that the river meets top-tier standards for cleanliness.

Organizers also emphasize that the natural current of the Danube remains very strong, meaning that visitors must use the beach at their own risk and exercise proper caution in moving water.

To help mitigate these natural river hazards, a professional lifeguard is stationed on-site at all times during the beach’s official operating hours between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The project represents part of a larger movement to change how residents interact with the urban waterfront. Cili Lohász, co-chair of VALYO (City and River Association), explained that the organization is actively working toward a long-term goal of establishing Budapest as a true Danube bathing city, where safe river swimming is fully integrated into municipal life.

The local demand for this lifestyle was clear at the opening ceremony, where families and children immediately took over the beach to cool off in the river.

For expats looking to visit the District XI site, transport logistics are quite straightforward. According to information provided on the BGYH website, the Árasztó-part public beach can be easily reached by taking municipal BKV bus line 33, or by cycling along the designated bike path that runs along the river embankment.

From 12 August, Budapest will have a new place to cool off in the Danube: the Duna-fürdő Árasztó-part free beach. The city hopes the project will help reconnect locals with the river, making the Danube’s banks part of daily urban life once again.
