The national average temperature for July this year was 22.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.3 C above the 1991-2020 average of 21.5 C, the statement said. This makes this year's July the tenth warmest on record in Hungary since 1901.

The national average rainfall was just 19.8 millimetres in July this year, which is 73 percent below the 1991-2020 average of 71.9mm, and the sixth driest July on record nationwide since the start of the 20th century, the weather service said.

In many parts of the Great Plain, covering over half of Hungary in the south-east, the monthly average temperature exceeded 23 C, and in some smaller areas it even reached 24 C, the statement said.

Monthly rainfall exceeding 50mm was recorded in only a few places, mainly in Zala County, in western Hungary, while less than 10mm fell in many parts of the Great Plain. There were even some stations, such as Zsadany, in south-eastern Hungary, where no rainfall was recorded at all in July.

Meanwhile, Hungary one of hottest countries in Europe this Monday

Hungary was one of the hottest countries in Europe on Monday, with maximum temperatures mostly ranging between 36 and 40 degrees Celsius, and the daily average temperatures typically stood between 27C and 30C, weather service HungaroMet said on Facebook.

Europe continues to be characterised by hot weather, with maximum temperatures exceeding 30C across much of the continent.

The cold front that passed north of Hungary two days ago temporarily helped ease the heat in Germany, Poland and Northern Europe, the service said.
