Market 1897: Wine Happy Hour, Tapas Deals & Blackboard Specials
For expats looking for an after-work drink, a quick bite or a longer evening over food and wine, Market 1897 by Borbíróság has several special options to choose from throughout the week.

This popular restaurant located beside Budapest's Great Market Hall follows a fresh "market-to-table" approach, with much of its produce sourced from the neighbouring market.

Its menu combines Hungarian-inspired cuisine with influences from markets around the world, while a changing blackboard selection brings something different to the table on a regular basis.

For those dropping in after work, Happy Hour runs on weekdays from 3:00–5:00pm, when guests can get two glasses of wine for the price of one, from the restaurant's winery selection.

Thursday evenings have their own attraction, with After Work Tapas & Wine from 5:00–7:00pm. The offer includes one bite and one glass of wine for HUF 2,490 per person, making it an easy option for a relaxed start to the evening.

The restaurant's Blackboard Special, a constantly changing selection of dishes inspired by markets around the world. The concept has drawn on flavours and atmospheres ranging from Barcelona and Tokyo to Lisbon and Naples, with the selection refreshed regularly.

The restaurant's wine offering goes beyond its own winery selection, with Hungarian and international wines also available. The overall vibe is a combination of great fresh food and carefully selected wines in a relaxed stylish setting.

The kitchen is headed by chef Gábor Nyilas, working alongside consulting chef Ádám Barna, one of Hungary's best-known contemporary chefs. His cooking is known for taking familiar Hungarian flavours and ingredients and giving them a more refined, contemporary treatment.

Barna previously led the kitchen at St. Andrea in Budapest, where he was named Chef of the Year by Dining Guide in 2018, before moving to Esztergom and helping 42 Restaurant earn a Michelin star.

Diner reviews are notably positive it's worth noting. Market 1897 currently holds a high 4.4/5 rating from more than 1,200 Tripadvisor reviews, with recent visitors praising the freshness and presentation of the food, creative twists on familiar dishes, and the quality of the service.

Wine recommendations and pairings also receive frequent praise, while several reviewers describe the atmosphere as relaxed and welcoming.

Market 1897 is open Monday to Saturday from 11:30am to 10:30pm, making it suitable for everything from a daytime meal to an after-work stop or evening dinner.
