Orbán Could Face Prison Over Threats to Asset Recovery Office Staff

Prime Minister Peter Magyar on Monday called on MPs to stand by investigators, prosecutors, police and tax officials and defend them from Viktor Orban. He slammed the former prime minister for a comment in a recent interview insisting that anyone who takes a job at the Asset Recovery and Protection Office, whose task it is to uncover corruption, could be called to account in the future.
In an interview on Sunday, the Fidesz leader said that anyone who takes a job at the anti-corruption body, makes decisions or participates in procedures there could not escape financial and legal accountability "when the rule of law is restored".
Magyar called the comment "unprecedented", saying Orban had "threatened" prosecutors, police, tax officials and investigators with legal accountability. He said this constituted "violence against an official" under the penal code, punishable by one to five years in prison. Magyar also noted that Orban currently has no immunity.
Addressing Tisza MPs, the prime minister said they had known in advance that "the fallen mafia is capable of anything -- it threatens and slanders".
"I ask everyone to express our solidarity and stand by Hungarian investigators, Hungarian prosecutors, Hungarian police and Hungarian tax officials and defend them, even from Viktor Orban if need be," he said.
