Xpat Inteview: Michael Plyler
I'm 53 years old born in Kannapolis, NC, USA. Served as Master Sergeant (Ret) 21.5 years in the US Army Medical Corps and Airborne. My four children are grown and live in the USA.

For now I'm working in Iraq as a Security Consultant (Medical), but, soon I will take time off to finish a book I'm writing.

My house sets on a hill overlooking Lake Deseda, near Toponar, where I find my peace and serenity.




Interview:

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I came to Hungary in 1995 with IFOR working with a company that supported those forces. I fell in love with the country and the people. Although I work in other places I always came back here and finally made it my home.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes, in several countries, Germany, Haiti, Indonesia, Zambia, Kuwait, and now Iraq.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The generosity of the Hungarians. I've found acceptance here and feel at peace.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
The Castle, a boat trip on the Danube, Vaci Utca, the Mana Resturant and stay at the Gellert and have a good bath.

5. What is your favorite Hungarian food?
For the price Hungarian food can't be beat. I love fresh pogácsa in the morning and you can't beat the fresh warm bread. I prefer just to eat out most of the time because it's just plain fantastic food made by chefs and served by real waiters.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Pesti Istvan and pickled paprika.

7. What is your favorite Hungarian word?
Szerelem

8. What do you miss the most from home?
I miss traveling in the US. It's a beautiful country and there's lots to see. I love trout fishing. Trout only live in beautiful places. Hungary is a beautiful country it's just that the US is much larger and the vastness of it is hard to give up.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I would like to make knives and swords. It's my hobby.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
A Plumber!

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Rome and Venice

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Yucatan, Mexico

13 What was your favorite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
I traveled when I was in my teens and never really gave it up. My favorite band was Pink Floyd. I now like Claude Challe and other Lounge Music

14. What can't you resist?
A beautiful Sunset

15. Red wine or white?
Tokai

16. Book or movie?
How about both...

17. Morning person or night person?
Most surely a night person

18. Dog person or cat person?
I like all animals especially dogs and cats.

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest.

20.What would you say is your personal motto?
Give it your best whatever you do.
