Having lived in other parts of Europe he proudly calls Budapest home which might be due to his great-grandfather having left the Dual Monarchy from present-day Slovakia. His hobbies are pushed aside due to so much work and studies right now but as soon as he graduates he’d like to get back to a sailing school on Balaton and get his sailing license.
Travelling was his hobby but now that he’s accomplished his dram of flying around the world he’s happy to stay at home and spend time with friends.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I moved here in 2001 but had been here in 1995 on a backpacking trip through Europe. At that time I already fell in love with the urban architecture, layout and size of Budapest. I thought I would try living here for about 6 months and then move on to other pastures but in the end I was enraptured by the city.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes, in Germany as a student and in Poland as a teacher of English.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
How many bars there are in Budapest to have a great drink. Sometimes we wish to go out for a drink and can’t decide on which bar to chose because there are so many.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Take the Hop On Hop Off bus tour to get a glimpse of everything noteworthy and then they can go back to see something in more detail if they wish.
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Eszterházy torta. Some may say that desert is not a food but I could surely live on just Eszterhazy cake.
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Red wine (well, it’s not in the fridge but in the kitchen).
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Tessék.
8. What do you miss the most from home?
My family.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Making music videos.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Doctor – I have a lot of respect for them but I would never be able to handle all of the issues and stress that they have to deal with.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Hawaii. I highly recommend that everyone get there once in their lifetime. Try to see at least three of the islands and get your feet wet and your hands dirty while there (meaning enjoy a lot of outdoor activities and not just stay at the resorts).
12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
I’ve dreamt of going to Argentina for a long time so that would be my next wish.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Six Degrees of Separation – the play or the movie. It says a lot about life.
14. What can't you resist?
Chocolate. Anything with chocolate.
15. Red wine or white?
Red. I have some in my kitchen if you wish.
16. Book or movie?
Movie. With work and university I have no time to read for leisure right now but when flying I’m always reading – when on the ground I enjoy dinner and a movie.
17. Morning person or night person?
Both if that’s permitted.
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Minority rights in Hungary.
19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest. I don’t have a car and I don’t want a car as I love to walk or take public everywhere I go.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
I know it’s cheesy but Carpe Diem. We have only one opportunity so enjoy it.
