XpatLoop Interview: Rafael Alonso, GM Of IBEROSTAR Grand Hotel Budapest

The reason why I choose this career is because my angry to discover new places and cultures and prove of that is that I have been an expatriate since I finished my degree. First I moved to the Middle East to discover the “perfect” luxury Hospitality in companies as Ritz-Carlton and Starwood, after that I spent 2 lovely years working in Mandarin Oriental in Prague and last year I spent it in Atlanta, United States, working for Hyatt.
I accepted the challenge to be the GM of the IBEROSTAR Grand Hotel Budapest because it has everything I have been dreamed. Boutique hotel oriented to the guest satisfaction, taking care of every single small detail in order to provide the best experience to my guest.
About the city I would like to say that I am completely in love it. Dynamic, interesting, mysterious and alive are just some adjectives that come to my mind. I am really enjoying my time here and I hope to stay in Budapest lot of years.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived here just 4 months ago for work to become the GM of the IBEROSTAR Grand Hotel Budapest.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes. I started my “expatriation” in the Middle East (Qatar and Dubai), then I spent 2 years in Czech Republic, Switzerland and my last year in the United States.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The incredible architecture and the hospitality of the city.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
They should go for a walk and get lost discovering by themselves this marvelous and imperial city.
5. What is your favorite Hungarian food?
Everything related with duck.
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Iberian Ham
7. What is your favorite Hungarian word?
“Jó reggelt”. It sounds so good in the morning.
8. What do you miss most from home?
Family, friends and the “Tapas” way of living.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I guess surgeon, following the family tradition.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Nothing related with being in an office signing papers which it is what people think GMs are doing.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
In Miami with my family.
12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Thailand would be lovely.
13. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?
A delicious Iberian Ham plate with a glass of wine.
14. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Radiohead, The silence of the lambs, Rugby.
15. Red wine or white?
Red Ribera del Duero wine.
16. Book or movie?
Book.
17. Morning person or night person?
24/7 If you want to succeed in this industry.
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
The corruption of the governments.
19. Buda or Pest side?
Pest to enjoy, Buda to rest.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
"No single drop of water thinks it is responsible for the flood"
