German companies reinvest over 50% of the profits on their operations in Hungary, German ambassador Lieselore Cyrus said in an interview published in business daily Napi Gazdaság. The ambassador noted that the 6,000 German firms active in Hungary have invested some 20 billion euros in Hungary in the past 25 years and have created 300,000 jobs.

Luxembourg-based RTL Group filed an official complaint with the European Commission on Thursday over Hungary’s new tax on the advertising revenues of media outlets. RTL argues that the tax is “confiscatory” in that it aims to collect 80% of the tax (HUF 4,5 billion or USD 18,7 million) from an independent media group possessing just 13.5% market share.

Hungary’s Competition Office (GVH) on Wednesday said it fined Magyar Telekom 90 million forints for misleading advertising. In television advertisements of its Next Business XL and M packages run over six weeks in autumn 2013, the company failed to inform the targeted SMEs that the monthly fees apply only for four or more subscriptions and if other conditions were met.

The government is not planning to change the taxation rate for companies next year but the longterm goal is to have a flat-rate tax, Mihály Varga, the economy minister, told a press conference. Presenting details of the government’s tax proposals, Varga said that small and medium-size ventures would continue to pay a 10% corporate tax, and large companies 19%.
